Patrick was working as a farm hand for a family named Carroll.

The family attended the Catholic Church in Menona and became familiar with the locals. Patrick and James left for South Dakota to Homestead along with John Carroll (wife Mary Ryan) and Mary's Aunt Ellen Bennett, and found the land not too fertile compared to the beautiful soil in Iowa. In Patrick's Homsteading papers, when asked if patrick had been a resident in Aurora, South Dakota, James replied "all except for one month where he went home to get him a wife". We have not been able to locate the marriage records for Patrick McGovern and Ellen Ryan, but know it was that one week.........

Things did not work out in South Dakota, and the group all moved on:
Patrick and wife Ellen and 2 kids Margaret and patrick moved to South Omaha
James went back to Iowa and lived with his brother Thomas and his family (Dad lived there too)
John and mary Carroll moved to Chicago
Ellen Bennett also moved to Chicago

(And, no relation to George McGovern who lived in So Dakota)

McGovern's to America

The Application for Naturalization by Martin McGovern is dated 1867 (from Cleveland, Ohio). I understand you need to live in the USA for 5 years prior to applying for naturalization, so we assume Martin came to the USA in 1862 approx.

Naturalization papers are dated 1869 for Martin and Thomas (17 years old).

Martin McGovern and Mary Moran family from Ireland

Martin McGovern was born in Ireland 1820, died 1900 in Iowa (near or in New Mellary).
He married Mary Moran in Ireland (year unknown). Their children were all born in Ireland:
Martin b 1845 Ireland married Cecelia Kearney 1868 in Cleveland Ohio
after Cecelia died, he remarried Winifred Kane (Cain) 9/9/1884
Catherine b 1847 m Patrick Chambers 7/1867 Cleveland, Ohio
Thomas b 1852 m Mary Geraghty (Gerrity) in Monona Iowa

Mary Moran-we have never been able to locate whether or not Mary ever came to the USA, we are guessing she died in childbirth, or on the boat to the USA. (as noted below- in 1900 it states she passed 39 years prior, so in James birth year).
